COACHES

*Ray Stewart *Coach Flight Blue Premier*Director of Skill Development*

Ray was a high school basketball All-American at Perth Amboy High School in New Jersey. After high school he went on to play college ball.  He played one year at BYU-Hawaii before going to UVSC for his sophomore season in 1989. Ray was a lightning-quick guard in his prime, and still sits atop the UVSC record book in the “steals” category. After leaving UVSC, Ray played for two years at the University of California Santa Barbara under legendary Coach Jerry Pimm. After college Ray played professionally in both Sweden and Brazil.

He moved into coaching after his playing career beginning with Dos Pueblos High School in Santa Barbara. He was the an Assistant Basketball Coach at UVSC.  He has 13 + years of player development experience directing youth basketball private lessons, classes, camps and clinics.  Coach Ray has an extraordinary gift for relating to kids and teaching them correct basketball fundamentals in a way that keep the kids excited and hungry for more.

* Melinda Johnsen * Coach Flight Black Premier *

(Excerpts from Daily Herald Article, to view complete article click here)

Melinda Johnsen was known to have open jumpshots when she played at BYU, yet often she declined them. Johnsen's self-understood trademark was making sure others more proficient at scoring didn't have such good looks at the basket.

Now, at 24 years old and a couple of seasons removed from her playing days, Johnsen gets to control both ends of the floor. She is entering into her second season with Utah Flight. Coach Johnsen is also the head varsity coach for Timpanogos High School. In her first season she led the TImberwolves to a Region Championship and took her team to the 4A State Championship game. She was named Region 7 Coach of the Year.

Johnsen was a co-captain for BYU, who led the Cougars in steals and assists in her final season, 2006-07. She played the most minutes, scoring just six points a game, yet was often heralded by coach Jeff Judkins for her work at keeping other teams' top perimeter scorers from having as much of an impact.

The former shutdown defender is not going to forget another reason why some of her BYU teams were so successful: "I might have not been the biggest offensive threat in my day, but I know you need to score to win. But I've always thought that on offense, sometimes the ball goes in and sometimes it doesn't. Defense -- now that's just a lot of effort, and you've got to bring that everyday."

*Haley Hall * Coach Flight Blue Select *

Haley graduated from Clearfield High in 2006 as the all-time school leader in scoring, assists, steals, 3-point field goals and was a 4-time all stater.  She was named 5-A MVP after her senior year and led the state in scoring for 3 years in a row.

She started her career at BYU in 2006 and helped defeat the 5th ranked team in the country when she hit the game winning 3 pointer at Stanford.  In her 8th game, the season ended with a torn ACL.  After a year of rehab she tore it again right before the next season.  One more year of rehab ended in another torn ACL (other knee) in the first game of the 2008 season.  She came back one more time and just recently completed her first healthy season at BYU.  She has been named captain each of the past two seasons and led the team in assists and steals in 09-10.

During her injury years she spent every practice and every game on the bench with the coaches.  She developed a greater knowledge of the game and also a love for coaching.  She has coached club teams the past two years as well as doing many skills clinics for BYU as well as numerous high schools around the state.  Haleyʼs strengths include ball handling, shooting, and mental toughness.  She has a knowledge of not only the game of basketball but also the mental game of believing in yourself.  She loves to be in the gym and loves working with others and improving their games together.

* Dorne Hall * Coach Flight Black Select *

Dorne started coaching in 1989 at Centerville Jr. High.  He then changed careers and waited 10 years to get back into basketball.  He spent five years at Northridge High with the boys' program from 2000-2005 as well as coaching his own kids in competitive leagues during that time.  In 2006 he moved to Clearfield High to take over the girls' program.  They compiled an 18-4 record that year.  He left Clearfield High after one season in order to have the time to follow his daughter Haley and her career at BYU.

SInce then he has spent time coaching at the club level and doing individual training whenever possible.  Dorne is a believer and a teacher of the "Attitude Technique" by Coach Homer Price. Attitude has to be positive to produce successful results.  A positive attitude leads to a positive self-image and they both lead to successful people and athletes.  He believes anyone can reach mediocrity, but achievers can decide how high above that plateau they want to go.  As long as the thinking is good, worthy, and clearly defined in the mind, the individual is on the way to some very satisfying experiences--on the way, in fact, to total success.
