Just as we expected, Morgan Bailey has exploded into her junior year in a big way. The past three games have displayed her dominance as an inside presence, as well as being a threat from outside. The Orem Tigers started with a lineup that didn't have a girl over 5-foot-9. Timpanogos had two six-footers on the floor. The Timberwolves used their height and inside presence to beat the Tigers, 61-47, Thursday. Timpanogos' 6-2 center Morgan Bailey was a presence at both ends of the floor with 27 points, four blocks and 12 rebounds. "Morgan Bailey is a fantastic post player," Timpanogos coach Liz Darger said. "She can score with three players hanging off her. Brittney Martin- Syracuse High School Syracuse found themselves in the 5A top five for the first time in the school's short two year history. Freshman Brittney Martin is leading the charge up the rankings. She is averaing 16.50 points and 13 rebounds a game. In her first start today against Roy, she netted 19 points, brought down 12 rebounds, and grabbed 6 steals! Brit may be young, but is a definate force to be reckoned with. Marquelle Funk- Lone Peak Lone Peak is off to a quick start beating their opponents by and average 33 point average. Sophomore Marquelle Funk continues to be a huge contributor for the Knights. Last night against West Jordan she filled up the stat sheet with 18 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals, and 5 assists. Allison Blake- Davis High School Senior Alli Blake knows that losing offensive powerhouses Dani Hosking and Kelsy Campbell to graduation puts the majority of the leadership scoring responsibilities directly on her shoulders. Alli proved last night that she can handle the pressure. Last night against top ranked American Fork, the six footer posted 17 points, including two three pointers. Timpanogas' Morgan Bailey had a battle on her hands against the fiesty Payson Lions. Payson jumped out to an early lead on the Timpanogas by limiting the touches provided to Timpanogas' star center, Morgan Bailey. Bailey was only able to manage to come up with 6 points in the first half. But with her team down by 15 in the third quarter, Morgan made up her mind that she was not going to go down without a fight. She helped her team claw their way back and brought them within 3 points. Her dominate inside performance of 23 points, 18 rebounds, and 3 blocked shots was not quite enough get the team a win, but it at least gave them a fighting chance. BYU has signed a pair of high school stars to its women's basketball team, including a highly touted guard from Wasatch High in Heber City. Signing with the Cougars are Wasatch's Kim Parker and Stephanie Vermunt, a 6-0 forward from Alberta, Canada. "We're excited to have these two outstanding student-athletes join our program," said coach Jeff Judkins. "Both will fit in with our program and will be a big part of our team." Parker, 5-11, led the Wasps to the 3A state title last season. In her junior year, she averaged 14.3 points, 7.6 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 3.9 steals and 2.0 blocks. She's a two-time First Team All State and a two-time All-Region honoree and was named to last year's State Championship All-Tournament Team. "Kim is the best player out of the state of Utah and has been playing on a winning program," added Judkins. Kim Parker- Wasatch High School In the Hall of Fame Game featuring the defending 3A champions Wasatch and the defending 2A champions, South Sevier, Wastach pulled out a tight 52-48 win thanks to BYU bound Kim Parker. Kim led all scorers with 20 points. Kaycee Mansfield- American Fork High School The American Fork Cavemen start the season with a #1 preseason ranking with good reason. They return all five starters from last years second place 5A tournament team. It is hard to start on top, and stay on top, but UVU bound senior, Kaycee Mansfield, didn't seem to feel the pressure as she calmly put away 21 points against a scappy Payson team. AF won 64-41. Makenzi Morrison- Alta High School With her team down by six with under two minutes to go, freshman Makenzi Morrison knew she had to make something happen. She went in an caused 3 turnovers, dished out two assists, and drained her free-throws helping the Hawks claw their way to a 51-49 victory over Olympus. Makenzi led all scorers with 15 points. Brittney Martin and Kiana Fonua- Syracuse High School The freshman/sophmore duo of Brittney Martin and Kiana Fonua are going to prove key to the success of the Sycracuse Titans this year. Syracuse was led by the youngsters with the great play of freshman Brittany Martin, who scored 14 points, while also grabbing 14 rebounds, and Kiana Fonua was also a key player in the win, picking up 10 points and five steals. The Titans beat the Bountiful Braves, 68-42. Marquelle Funk- Lone Peak High School 6-0 sophomore, Marquelle Funk, helped lead her team to an easy victory over Kearns, 68-35. Without getting many touches on the ball, Funk managed 9 points. Even more impressive was her all-around versatility. It was her six steals, six blocked shots and four assists that impressed the crowd and the coaching staff. |
