The Utah Flight Premier Black started their tournament off right with a win over the Sting Rays of Staten Island, 53-49.

The first 10 minute of the game was a seesaw battle, both teams jockeying for position.  We started taking the reins of the game just before halftime.  Makenlee "Mak" Williams hit a jumper that led to taking the lead.  Patiently breaking the press was another key factor in establishing control of the game, and point guard Lani Maclennan was doing her job, directing traffic through the break.  A deep three by Leticia Lewis led to a one point lead going into halftime, 24-23.

Coming out of the half, Mackenzie Bruggeman hit Emily Howey on a sweet interior post to post look.  Bruggeman then came back and hit a bucket of her own, extending the lead 28-23.  But Staten Island wasn't giving up.  They came back to tie the game up at 28-28.

McKenna Lusk had a sweet pass as she drew the defense on her drive and dumped it to Emily Howey for the easy two.  Mak was all over the floor, hitting the offensive boards hard, getting a put back.  McKenna had her second sweet interior pass to Howey.  Leticia Lewis hit  a jumper from the elbow.  And we were all tied at 38.

Flight was being patient in their offensive set, swinging the ball to opposite corner, to find Lani Maclennan for a deep three from the corner, giving Flight a 41-38 lead.  Arrika Andersen got a steal and finished with a strong lay-in.  Mak hit another jumper to extend the lead to 6.  Emily Howey went to the glass to collect an offensive board and put back.
